Hibiscus Benefits, History & Juneteenth Traditions
Hibiscus, Herbal Tradition & the Spirit of Juneteenth
Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, culture, community, and joy.
Observed annually on June 19th, Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States and has evolved into a meaningful cultural holiday centered around gathering, storytelling, food, music, wellness, and reflection.
Many Juneteenth celebrations feature red foods and beverages — a tradition believed to symbolize resilience, strength, sacrifice, and joy. Red drinks in particular hold deep cultural significance across many Black culinary traditions. Hibiscus, with its naturally rich crimson color, has become one of the botanicals often associated with these celebratory rituals.
Across the African diaspora, hibiscus has long been enjoyed in teas and beverages:
- Sorrel in the Caribbean
- Bissap in West Africa
- Agua de Jamaica in Mexico and Latin America
These traditions connect generations through flavor, hospitality, and herbal wellness.
At Herb’N Eden, we wanted to honor the spirit of Juneteenth through intentional self-care rooted in plants, ritual, and community. The Hibiscus Citrus Set was created as a celebration of those traditions — combining botanical skincare with our first-ever loose-leaf tea experience.
The collection pairs vibrant citrus oils with hibiscus-inspired care to create a ritual that feels bright, grounding, refreshing, and restorative all at once.
Because celebration can look like many things:
- Gathering with loved ones
- Taking time to rest
- Caring for your body
- Sharing herbal traditions
- Creating moments of joy
This June, we invite you to slow down, pour a cup of tea, nourish your skin, and celebrate the beauty of intentional care.
