Guiding Your Being with Sound & Food with Akiyla McQueen

Holistic living is a full sensory experience. From the things we hear out in the world to what we put on and in our bodies, plants are a fool-proof way to healing your mind, body, and spirit.

In the latest episode of the herb'neden podcast, Terran sits down with Akiyla McQueen, a holistic engineer and mother of 3 to discuss the world of music therapy and the connection between sound and food in holistic living.

We are constantly influenced by sound and we synchronize ourselves through the dominate vibrations in the room, called entrainment. Music or sound therapy helps the body reach homeostasis through vibrations, which can help with healing both mentally and physically. Spoken words also can increase, or lower, your vibrations which is why positive affirmations or what others speak to you can effect your mood.

The image shows a serene, rustic setting featuring a collection of Tibetan singing bowls placed on a woven mat. Behind the bowls is a large, metallic gong, partially visible and mounted on a wooden frame. The background consists of bamboo walls arranged in a lattice pattern, contributing to the tranquil, natural ambiance. Soft, warm lighting enhances the peaceful atmosphere, highlighting the handcrafted details of the bowls and the bamboo surroundings.

In sound therapy, singing bowls are a tool music therapists use to create sound waves to allow the body to be more in tune with itself. For example, delta or theta waves help promote relaxation and sleep where as alpha or gamma waves promote awareness and focus. Sound bowls can also be "tuned" to different chakras that help balance the body. Learn more about sound healing here.

The image shows a close-up of fresh vegetables on a dark wooden surface. In the foreground, there are several vibrant, red tomatoes still on the vine, glistening with water droplets. To the right, a bunch of pale parsnips with green tops are partially visible, tied together with a small red band. In the lower part of the image, a few orange carrots are laid out, also with some water droplets, adding to the fresh and appetizing appearance of the vegetables. The background includes a hint of green leafy vegetables, adding to the fresh produce arrangement.

Part of Akiyla's spiritual journey includes veganism. After turning to a plant-based diet at 19, she started to experience improvements in her PCOS symptoms and chronic bronchitis. After experiencing these improvements, Akiyla became certified in raw vegan certification to share the knowledge with others. Listen to more of Aikyla's vegan journey here.
