How well do you know your skin type?

Are you frustrated with your skin?

Do you try different products and routines month after month because you haven’t found one that actually works?

Skin problems can lead to even bigger problems like self-esteem issues and stress, which actually can make matters worse. The good news is there are only three things you need for any skin:

  1. Knowing what type of skin you have
  2. A skincare routine to treat and prevent your challenge
  3. Patience!

I’ll break down the different skin types here and suggest natural products to add to your routine. Keep in mind, though, your diet also plays a role in your skin’s appearance. Detoxing is a way to help remove blemish-causing things from your body alongside your skincare routine. Either way, I can’t stress the patience requirement enough! Using natural products will give your skin the nutrients it needs to be clear and radiant but it won’t happen overnight. You will notice a difference in results, though!

Skin type 1: Normal skin

If you have normal skin, congratulations! You’re the skin envy of everyone else. You rarely experience breakouts or flaky skin and all you ever really do is wash it. Your skin doesn’t attract dirt or bacteria. You’re blessed with good genes so you probably aren’t even reading this.

Suggested products for normal skin

Even if you don’t have skin issues at all, using natural soaps and products is the best way to ensure unknown ingredients that your skin hasn’t come in contact with before don’t cause breakouts for you. Natural cleansers are better because they give your skin the nutrients it needs, while commercial soaps use fragrances and who knows what else for no real skin benefit.

A basic natural skincare routine for normal skin would be to:

  • Wash twice daily with any natural soap
  • Use a toner after washing
  • Moisturize with a light oil after toning
  • Exfoliate maybe once a week or lightly once a day if you use a sisal cloth. This helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent the rare breakouts you get.

Skin type 2: Oily skin

If you’re like me and you’re shiny all the time, then you have oily skin. Oily skin simply means your sebaceous glands produce too much sebum, the natural oil your skin produces. This makes your pores clog as it attracts dirt and bacteria, which then cause breakouts on your face.

Suggested natural products for oily skin

Because oily skin causes breakouts, I suggest natural astringents to draw out impurities in the pores. I also suggest products that clear up hyperpigmentation that often happens alongside acne with oily skin.

A natural skincare routine for oily skin would be to:

  • Wash twice daily with
    • Activated charcoal soap which is a magnet for skin impurities. Our soap is also made with peppermint essential oil which is also an astringent.
    • Tea tree and Turmeric soap which lightens hyperpigmentation from scars left by breakouts.
  • After washing, use a toner to remove excess dirt and to tighten the pores so toxins can’t get in.
  • Moisturize with a light oil after toning. You don’t need much because your skin naturally produces enough. A little goes a long way.
  • Exfoliate two to three times a week or lightly once a day if you use a sisal cloth. This helps to remove dead skin cells and prevent the rare breakouts you get.
  • Our turmeric powder and Moroccan Red clays make great face masks that gently exfoliate the skin, help with hyperpigmentation, and calm irritated skin.

Skin type 3: Dry skin

Dry skin occurs when your sebaceous glands don’t produce enough sebum (the oil your skin naturally produces), causing the skin to flake and turn red with irritation. Wrinkles are more visible with dry skin because it lacks elasticity.

Suggested natural products for dry skin

I recommend using products that are rich with moisturizers even when washing the face. Add moisture at every step in your routine so the skin remains supple throughout the day.

A daily routine for dry skin would be to:

  • Wash the face with a moisturizing soap like our oatmeal honey soap. Oats are a natural moisturizer and honey is an anti-inflammatory that will work to reduce irritation.
  • Moisturize as often as needed, but be sure to use a light oil so your sebaceous glands don’t become overactive.
  • Exfoliate lightly no more than twice a week to not further irritate or break the skin where its dry. Our turmeric powder and Moroccan Red clays make great face masks that gently exfoliate the skin, help with hyperpigmentation, and calm irritated skin.

Skin type 4: Combination skin

As if one weren’t enough, some of us deal with two types of skin with double the trouble. Combination skin is dry in some places and oily in others. For example, oily skin on the forehead can cause breakouts, while dry skin around the nose is red and flaky. Sound familiar?

Suggested natural products for combination skin

You’ll have to treat your skin differently for each symptom.Use more oil where your skin is dry, and use more astringents and toner where your skin is oily.

A daily natural routine for combination skin is:

  • Wash twice a day with our tea tree and turmeric soap, which has both astringent and moisturizing properties.
  • Treat dry zones with more oil and/or body butters. Treat oily zones with a toner and light oil.
  • Exfoliate lightly no more than twice a week to not further irritate or break the skin where its dry. Our turmeric powder and Moroccan Red clays make great face masks that gently exfoliate the skin, help with hyperpigmentation, and calm irritated skin.

Skin type 5: Sensitive skin

Sensitive skin is easily irritated by even minimal factors like the weather. Skin is sensitive to unnatural products, but sensitive skin types notice extreme irritation due to sun, wind, cold, and so forth. Commercial beauty products are your worst nightmare.

Suggested natural products for sensitive skin

If your skin is sensitive, you have to know the ingredients in everything you put on your face. That way you can eliminate the irritants and the breakouts while still getting the nutrients your skin needs. Fragrances are the common irritant among people with sensitive skin so watch out for these.

A daily natural routine for sensitive skin is:

  • Wash twice a day with an unscented soap like our coconut and kaolin clay soap or our oatmeal honey soap. Lavender soaps work as well for a light scent that isn’t harsh on the skin.
  • Moisturize with a light oil like our chamomile and calendula blend.
  • Exfoliate lightly no more than twice a week to not further irritate or break the skin where its dry. Our turmeric powder and Moroccan Red clays make great face masks that gently exfoliate the skin, help with hyperpigmentation, and calm irritated skin.
